Quarterly Report on Regular Activities 2008-'09
1. Inauguration of NSS unit level activities.
NSS unit level activities of the year 2008-09 were inaugurated by our School Manager Very Rev. George C. Chalappuram Cor-Episcopa on 06-06-2008. School Principal Smt. Raniamma Thomas presided over the function. Tourism club co-ordinator Sri. Jimmy Joseph, NSS Programme Officer Sri. Shibu M. C. and all other staff members were participated. Volunteer Secretaries Dhanesh Raj and Nimmy K. A. delivered the welcome speech and vote of thanks respectively. NSS volunteers performed their cultural activities in the function.
2. NSS volunteer's photo ID card distribution.
The NSS unit had arranged photo identity cards for the whole volunteers and Advisory Committee members. The inauguration of the ID card distribution was conducted in the school assembly on 30-06-2008. Principal inaugurated the programme by giving the ID cards to the volunteer secretaries.
3. 'WORD TODAY' board inauguration.
For the improvement of the English communication skill and vocabulary of the students in our school, NSS unit has maintained hylum sheet boards of size (24"x8") in every class rooms. Our manager inaugurated this programme on 10-07-2008. Everyday a group of five students in the class would write an English word and its meaning on the board and keep it for that day. It is expected that the students in the class would learn the word effortlessly. At the end of that month, an evaluation related to these words would be conducted and select one student each from all classes, as winner. On the day of the next school assembly, NSS unit would award a shield to the winner, comprising the details of this programme.
4. Orientation for the First year students.
An orientation class about NSS activities was conducted for the first year students on 16-07-2008 afternoon.
Sri. Narayanan Namboothiri, NSS Programme Officer of SKVHSS, Kurichithanam lead the class. Our principal inaugurated this function with all active participation of the staff. Day after this class NSS admission forms were distributed to the interested students and enrolled them to the current year.
5. 'HEADLINE NEWS' board inauguration.
In connection with the new education method, a news board named as 'Head line News', made of hylum sheet was fixed near the school office. Students were directed to write the main headline news of the leading newspapers along with the school news. Through this programme, the students are expected to have an idea about journalism and its associated fields. Also they would have a chance to express their writing skills and related strategies.
6. Enrolment function of first year volunteers 2008-09.
The enrolment for the year 2008-09 batch of NSS volunteers was conducted on 01/08/2008 afternoon. The function was presided over by our Principal Smt. Raniamma Thomas and the keynote address was delivered by our Manager Very Rev. George C. Chalappuram Cor-Episcopa. Newly enrolled volunteers performed several cultural programmes on the occasion.
7. Award for SSLC & VHSE Students : 2007-'08.
Our school PTA conducted an award distribution programme on 04/08/2008 to congratulate the top winners of SSLC and VHSE Exam 2007-08. The NSS unit of this school presented to the top scorers shields comprising the unit name, NSS Emblem and the photograph of the winner. This is considered as an image building programme of NSS unit among the students and parents. Sri. K. P. Paulose, Director of our corporate St. Mary's Training College distributed the shields.
8. Seminar on 'Man and Nature'.
In connection with the Hiroshima Day, the NSS unit and Tourism Club of this school jointly conducted a seminar on 'Man and Nature'. Sri. V. V. Alias, Faculty in Dept. of communicative English of St. Thomas College, Pala lead the seminar. All the students of the VHSE and St. George TTI were participated. In association with the seminar, a film show, 'An Inconvenient Truth', directed by the Nobel prize winner and former American President Algore was also arranged.
9. Independence Day Rally and celebrations.
Our School celebrated the Independence day on 15th August 2008. NSS unit of this school took an active participation on this day by involving in the Independence Day Rally along with our corporate institutions like TTI and B Ed. training College. School Principal Sri. K. J. Raju hoisted the national flag and then flag off the rally. As a part of the celebrations we conducted a general meeting was presided over by our Manager. NSS unit presented Independence Day shields for the winners in elocution competition about 'India's struggle for Independence', Quiz programme, National Patriotic Song Competition etc. At the end of the programme, School Manager arranged "Payassam" for the whole students and participants.
11. Free eye care camp - A Village Level Programme.
In association with the Newsprint Nagar Y's men's Club, YMCA, LF Hospital Angamaly and DBCS Kottayam, our NSS unit conducted an eye care camp on 17.8.2008 at YMCA Centre, Karikode in our adopted ward.
As a part of the village level survey, our volunteers collected and registered the names of the patients. Smt. Padma Chandran, President of Mulakulam Grama Panchayat inaugurated the camp. About 550 villagers utilised this camp, out of which 47 were referred to free cataractic surgery at LF Eye Care Hospital, Angamaly. This programme have been a great help to our volunteers to understand and solve the various problems in the society.
12. Onam Celebrations.
NSS unit conducted Onam celebrations on 4th Sept 2008 in association with Tourism Club and other clubs in the school. "Pookkalam", cycle slow race and other fancy competitions were organised.
One of the traditional art of Kerala, 'Theyyam' was also included in the celebration, which is performed by an NSS volunteer. In the valedictory function School Manager delivered Onam message and arranged payassam for whole students in the school.
